What is a Mojo &
How
do you get it Working?
As
I look out of the two little square portholes above the wood burner
in my kitchen, I'm faced with the icicle-like state of my tree limbs
engraving their gloomy winter images against the perpetual grey skies
of June.
It sure is great to be sitting snug by the fire, tapping out this issue
of the newsletter on my laptop while listening to John Lee Hooker play
the blues with Johnnie Johnson.
Johnnie is arguably the world's greatest blues and rock-n-roll piano
player and, if the world can't agree on that title, there is a fair
amount of legend that says Chuck Berry wrote "Johnny B. Goode"
about him. Who knows if that story is true. But Chuck most definitely
played in Johnnie's band and, with Johnnie, was one of the most influential
musicians of the time.
If
you ever hear a driving keyboard running through the background of any
of the songs from that era, you can bet it's Johnnie; you can spot his
style at a thousand paces. I've seen him live several times and even
though he is in his twilight years, the man still has a twinkle in his
eyes and most definitely still has his mojo working.
With
the recent Austin Powers movies, we've heard a lot about "having
your mojo working", but it is a term or concept that dates way
back. The blues originated in the American Deep South around the Mississippi
Delta. The music tells of working way too hard, of people down on their
luck; and generally somewhere in between someone breaks someone else's
heart and runs off with all their money or starts fooling around on
them. (Tina our rooster has great material for a blues song at present!)
By
playing or listening to the blues, the downtrodden feel better about
their lot in life. Blues music changed as poverty drove people north
toward Chicago to find work, and with the introduction of electric instruments.
However, the music coming out of the Delta region often had hypnotic
grooves running through it that could put the listeners into a trance
and stop them thinking about their problems. The people of the American
South were highly superstitious, and their voodoo roots grew very close
to the surface. Every self-respecting blues man incorporates a black
cat bone and a mojo hand into at least one song. The great Muddy Waters
even wrote a song called "I got my mojo working but it just don't
work on you".
I
understand a mojo to be some kind of magic potion or spell, but the
term "mojo hand" dates back to the voodoo culture. Literally,
it's a spell in a bag. The bag holds a charm, amulet or herbs, to carry
about with you to bring luck and good fortune. Some say the bones from
the hands of the dead were placed in the bag - hence the name "mojo
hand". A black cat bone would grant invisibility or return a lost
love and sometimes help gamblers be lucky. Thank goodness, the black
magic connotations have long gone. Today, a mojo is like a magic spark
within us.
A
mojo seems quite an elusive thing. The big question seems to hang on
how to get that magic spark or mojo working.
How
do you know when you've lost your mojo?
- Nothing
seems to go right
- It
is difficult to get ahead
- Bad
habits rule your life
- No
matter how hard you try, things just end up pear shaped
- Relationships
are in tatters
- You
end up in angry situations
- The
bank manager calls regularly
- Your
pickup truck breaks down
Austin Powers had
his mojo stolen away by baddies, and it is definitely possible for other
people to stop our mojo from working. If we get tired and worn out and
run down by others, most certainly our mojo is going to pack up and
leave. To make a worn-out mojo shine again we need to ensure we are
hanging out with the right people and doing things for the right reasons.
Mojo
means magic, and magic happens when we live harmoniously with the environment.
We lose our mojo when we don't work with the environment around us.
Many magic spells and rituals are performed around the changing seasons,
and we need to follow the seasons too. Our mojo won't work if we are
feeling sick and out of sorts. In winter we need to go inward and prepare
for the new life and growth that come in springtime. When we move away
from our natural surroundings, the magic disappears from our life. Sometimes
we just need some time out to adjust and get our mojo working again.
How
do you find your lost mojo?
- Take
a close look at what you are trying to achieve
- Regroup
when things aren't working out - don't just keep trying, it will only
burn you out
- Decide
if your current path is leading you to what makes your soul sing
- Take
some time out to rest the mind, body and soul
- Work
out the types of things you were doing when your mojo was working
and return to those good habits
- Eat
well and exercise (boring I know, but it does make us feel great)
- Hang
out with others who have their mojo working - mojos can be contagious
- Find
time to be creative - mojos love creativity
- Work
with the environment around you - live with the seasons, de-clutter
what you can, and be with nature as much as possible
- Let
go of outcomes - know where you want to go but don't try to force
your way there
- Leave
space for the magic to occur
- Get
in the way of good - put yourself in circumstances that will influence
you positively
- Regularly
do the things that make you feel good
People
with their mojo working have a way of being that is very attractive
to others. You get a sense of power from them. People with mojo generally
are very charismatic and emanate a sense of success. Others want to
follow them; opportunities arise easily when the mojo is working. People
come on board without being asked.
People
with mojo have a distinctive style. When you've got it, others recognise
it and want to have it too, so you attract people and things very easily.
Like when Johnnie Johnson steps on stage, he has the respect of the
crowd, not only for the way he changed music history, but also for something
else that is intangible. He is 80 years old now, he is slower and doesn't
interact so well, but he still has the magic when he starts to play.
It is not something you can buy. Johnnie is a victim of the music industry
and has never been paid properly for what he created; but mojo can't
be bought, it is achieved. Last year Johnnie played Honky Tonk Woman
live on stage in concert with the Rolling Stones - that type of magic
is priceless, and it only occurs when your mojo is working well.
I
believe mojo comes from love - you achieve it when you are consistently
doing something you truly love and believe in. I know when I'm not worrying
about money or stressing about things I have no control over, the magic
happens. Johnnie still loves an audience and he still loves to play,
and people recognise and understand that piece of magic. That 's why
we buy CDs at gigs - we want to take home some of the magic.
In
life, having a black cat bone in your pocket will only help if you truly
believe it will. I think it is much better to be truly authentic, have
belief in yourself, and to have a true desire to be the best you possibly
can be. Now that's real magic.
How
do you know when your mojo is working?
- Things
come to you effortlessly
- You
are pulled forward into things, as opposed to pushing your way in
- Synchronicity,
miracles and magic occur all around you
- People
come into your life to inspire and encourage you
- Opportunities
come knocking - you don't have to chase them
- Money
flows effortlessly into your life
- What
you give out comes back ten-fold
- You
have a feeling of success about you
- Other
people comment on how there is something different about you, when
really not a lot has changed
- You
feel in your power and able to take on the world
